What is GTO?

GTO stands for Game Theory Optimal. It is a way of playing poker, derived from the mathematics of game theory, that is perfectly balanced. A player using a GTO strategy is unexploitable: no matter what their opponents do, those opponents cannot gain an edge in the long run.

In technical terms, GTO play corresponds to a Nash equilibrium - a set of strategies where no player can improve their result by changing their own strategy alone. In poker, that means mixing your actions (raising, calling and folding the right hands at the right frequencies) so that your opponents can never find a profitable counter.

In one line: GTO is the poker strategy that, played correctly, cannot lose money against any opponent over the long run.

Why GTO is unbeatable

Every poker strategy has a “best response” - the way an opponent would play to punish it most. A strategy has a leak whenever some opponent adjustment beats it. GTO is special because it is its own best response: there is no adjustment an opponent can make that turns a profit against it.

This is why professionals treat GTO as the baseline. If you play it, the worst case is breaking even against a perfect opponent - and every mistake your real opponents make leaks value to you automatically, without you having to do anything risky.

GTO vs. exploitative play

There are two broad ways to play poker:

  • GTO (unexploitable) play - you play the balanced equilibrium strategy and accept that you cannot be beaten, even if you also can’t maximally punish a specific weak opponent.
  • Exploitative play - you deviate from GTO to attack a specific opponent’s tendencies (for example, bluffing more against someone who folds too much). This wins more against bad players, but opens leaks of your own.

The key insight: you can only exploit safely once you know the GTO baseline. Without it, you have no reference point for how far you’re deviating or what it costs. That’s why every strong player learns GTO first, then layers exploits on top.

GTO preflop fundamentals

Preflop, GTO strategy is expressed as ranges - the full set of hands you play a given way from a given position, each with a frequency. Core ideas:

Ranges, not hands

You don’t think “what do I do with ace-king?” in isolation. You think about your entire range from that seat, and where ace-king sits within it. The classic 13×13 preflop chart shows exactly which hands to raise, call or fold, and how often.

Position is everything

Acting last is a structural advantage, so GTO ranges widen as you get closer to the button. A cutoff opens far more hands than under the gun, because position lets those extra hands realise more of their equity.

RFI, 3-betting and defending

Opening ranges are called RFI (raise-first-in). Facing a raise, GTO tells you which hands to 3-bet (re-raise) for value or as a bluff, and which to call - again, all as balanced frequencies rather than fixed rules.

GTO postflop fundamentals

After the flop, the same range logic continues, now shaped by the board. GTO decisions are ultimately about expected value (EV): the average number of big blinds a decision wins or loses.

Continuation betting

The raiser often c-bets the flop, but not always and not with every hand - GTO chooses a betting frequency and sizing that keeps the range balanced between value bets and bluffs, so the defender can’t simply fold or call everything.

Board texture

Dry boards (few draws) and wet boards (many draws) call for very different strategies. GTO adapts bet sizing and frequency to the texture - a concept that only clicks through repetition on real boards.

EV loss is the honest scorecard: instead of “right or wrong,” a good trainer tells you how many big blinds a decision actually cost versus the solver play.
